4.0 out of 5 stars Great mid-range Android phone, but low on-board memory,
By
JQ (Helena, MT USA) -
PROS: Android 2.2 OS (the BIGGEST pro); small, comfortable size; decent sound and picture quality; convenient access to buttons and ports
CONS: Low on-board memory drastically limits the number of apps that can be installed at a given time; no flash support; smaller screen than other Android phones

REVIEW: The primary reason I love this phone is because it runs the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system. This enables me to change almost any aspect of the phone's software interface to suit my unique preferences. Multiple home screens allow me to have multiple widgets available at a glance (full calendar, agenda view, clock w/ weather and app shortcuts, then a full-screen media player). Furthermore, I'm a software developer, so it's a rush to be able to write MY OWN apps and run them on my phone. I cannot say enough how awesome it is to have a phone that runs Android.

The phone itself is great, too. Number one, it was free from Verizon, so THAT was a perk. Aside from that, it's also nice and compact, so it goes anywhere easily. I bought a silicone cover almost immediately in order to protect it from slips and drops (it IS small, after all), and it works perfectly. Voice quality is fine, buttons are all conveniently located, the microSD card has an outer slot (no removing the battery cover to put it in and out), it has a headphone jack and a decent external speaker...in short, it meets all the minimum requirements I have for a good mobile phone.

The only real negative I have about this phone is the extremely limited on-board memory. With less than 190 MB of built-in storage (including space used by un-removable Verizon apps), the number of apps that can be installed on this phone is somewhat limited. I often find myself sifting through my apps to see which of them will get the ax in favor of another app that I HAVE to install. Hopefully, this will be an issue that goes away over time, as more app developers take advantage of the ability to install directly to an SD card, but for now, it's a bit of a pain.

Another bummer is the phone's inability to handle Flash, despite the Android OS's compatibility with it. Still, there are a few apps out there that get around the issue by converting Flash video into something the phone CAN handle, so you don't miss out entirely. (And YouTube works beautifully.)

Long story short, this phone is a great deal for someone who wants a robust Android phone without paying for the phone on the absolute highest shelf.

Swype Keyboard

An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. You can activate the Swype keyboard by pressing and holding in a text field, wait for popup to appear, click Input Method, and then select Swype.
In the image to the right, the word "mind" was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.
